My image got deleted[edit]

I don't know why File:Clint Hester.jpg got deleted. I personally believe I haven't broken any copyright rule. The video from where I took the image had a Commons license at the bottom of the description, so I don't think it should have been deleted. Does anyone know why? Rules on replacing files with new versions and other options for yearly updated statistics[edit]

Hi all

I'm currently doing a project with a UN agency who produce new versions of graphics ever year and want to find an easy and simple way to keep the graphics updated not only on Commons but also on other Wikimedia wikis. I can see a few options, however I don't know what the rules are around it.

1. Is it allowed to simply update the existing files on Commons to the latest version? That way it would automatically add the latest version of the file to each Wikipedia article. 2. If it would break the rules/not be preferable to overwrite the files with a newer version are there any bots which can link the two files in some way and automatically swap out the older versions with the newer versions across Wikimedia wikis, or some other automated tools to make it not a manual process?

Thanks very much

John Cummings (talk) 12:43, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

COM:OW - It'd be best to just upload new files and keep the old ones intact. A diehard editor (talk) 12:49, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@John Cummings: Additionally, you can have a file with a distinct name marked with {{Current}}, which can be updated, and should be used wherever such quasi-automatic updates will be desired. - Jmabel ! talk 17:12, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Jmabel and A diehard editor, one piece of information I missed from my original question is that I'm talking about 10,000s of files (6 graphics per country, in 6 languages and multiple topics). A few follow up questions
Has anyone done anything like this before?
"It'd be best to just upload new files and keep the old ones intact", is this process written down somewhere? Is there an best practice for linking them, showing one is depreciated, automatically updating the Wikipedia
Thanks again
John Cummings (talk) 10:42, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@John Cummings: if you want Wikipedia automatically updated on the new uploads, definitely use the approach with {{Current}}, use those in Wikipedia, and overwrite those annually. However, unless the data is something like a graph over time, where the new one simply adds information instead of changing information, we'd want all of the old ones as well. So you'd want FOO.ext (marked {{Current}}) as well as FOO (2023).ext, FOO (2024).ext, etc. And we'd be very glad to have older versions as well.
As for linking, a lot of that may simply be a matter of creating appropriate categories (so the information over time would group naturally by being in a category), but you can also use the "other versions" portion of {{Information}} or a similar template. Sometimes it's simpler to do a template for that "other versions" portion: if you have a big series that gets one added each year, it is easier to modify a template each year than to modify every file page. If you are systematic enough about your naming scheme, a single parameterized template should do the job for all the different things that are tracked over time. - Jmabel ! talk 15:10, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Advice on how to handle better rescan of an analog negative[edit]

Shot in Prague during the Velvet Revolution in 1989 on Iflord HP5 135 stock

First to note that I checked with Commons:Overwriting existing files and then searched these archives for clues but to no avail.

I recently uploaded a badly scanned negative (depicted on left). That scan, by a professional lab in Berlin as it happens, cut off the person on the left (as I later discovered). I am now having that same negative rescanned by a fine arts lab at higher resolution and manually cleaned (and also at considerably more expense).

So my question: (1) should I just upload that revised image under the same name, (2) ditto and also request the original scan be deleted (or hidden), or (3) use a new file name and request that the bad scan be deleted (or hidden)?

To also add that I think the image is historically significant and that it will be the first of about 40 images I will upload to Wikimedia shot just prior to and just after the fall of communism in East Germany and Czechoslovakia. Also taken using 35mm Nikon gear with a mix of professional and high‑street negative processing, so generally of high quality.

PS: I also offered the negatives to the German and Czech state archives but neither replied. In any case, I prefer to support Wikimedia.

PPS: if anyone wants to help with interpretation, I would be delighted to make contact!

Thanks in advance, RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 17:02, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In this case, since you are the photographer and uploader, it is clearly a friendly edit. Since it's the same photo, you can overwrite. I wouldn't bother asking for the earlier version to be deleted unless you have some specific reason to suppress it. It doesn't save any memory, and it may make it harder for any non-admin who might have some reason to want to understand just what you did in terms of upload history. (Plenty of people who don't have "admin" status nonetheless do a lot of tasks that might normally be thought of as administrative.) - Jmabel ! talk 17:17, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@RobbieIanMorrison: I agree with what Jmabel wrote above. If you are happy that the filename is the best filename for this photo, overwriting with the better image is the best solution in this case, because there's no reason that someone would prefer the image of lesser quality. I would only add that scanners of sufficient quality can do a very good job of scanning 35 mm negatives. So you might have a better control on the result by scanning yourself instead of paying labs for an uncertain result. (It's harder to find negative scanners for large negatives from the 1940s. I'm looking for one to scan negatives I inherited.) Ilford HP5 was what I often used in the 1980s. Given the grain, I am curious to see if the arts lab can really do a higher resolution. Unless they fill the image artificially, which I hope they don't. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:45, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: @Asclepias: Thanks for the very complete answers. In some weeks there will be two scans to compare! I did question the second lab about the relationship between graininess and resolution and was told that finely pixelated grain can look good on giant prints — make what you will of that! When I upload the second scan, I'll also note the scanning parameters and files sizes for both. This negative scanning is new territory for me — even though I worked extensively with 135 and 120 (6 × 7cm) formats. Tx again. RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 19:59, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
& thanks to you for free-licensing what are clearly some very valuable images. - Jmabel ! talk 01:29, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: I think that visual history belongs to the people of East Germany and Czechoslovakia — I just happened to have a camera in my hand at approximately the right time. And I suspect that some subjects were taking personal risks by consenting to be photographed by a western stranger? RobbieIanMorrison (talk) 07:23, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate file descriptions by Sally.a.asmar[edit]

While reviewing w:Wikipedia:Teahouse#Is having an unencyclopedic image description grounds for deletion or recaptioning?, I found that User:Sally.a.asmar has uploaded many images like File:المسجد الاقصى.jpg with an inappropriate and irrelevant description. It was all in 2018 so maybe it's not worth contacting the user but will somebody kindly improve the descriptions? They can be shown at other wikis when MediaViewer is used. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:05, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@PrimeHunter: Anyone may update the caption if there is an issue, and if it's disputed, users may follow the normal resolution process. It seems like maybe a bad translation. For starters, obviously, Palestine isn't a city. GMGtalk 13:37, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's images of a specific building and the description is a POV rant about the city with no mention of the building. I hoped somebody else would identify the building and fix it but I may work on it myself if nothing happens within a day. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:02, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The building (albeit a rather odd view of it) seems to be the Dome of the Rock. Deor (talk) 14:16, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah sorry. I figured that it being the Dome of the Rock was understood. GMGtalk 16:23, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: I removed most of the POV pushing, but it really should be rewritten entirely, and I don't know enough about that building to do so. QuicoleJR (talk) 15:05, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why does the English version of this template redirect to the Russian version?[edit]

Template: Template:Minpromtorg.gov.ru/en, isn't it supposed to go to an English text version? Tube of Light (talk) 16:06, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is no English version. Ruslik (talk) 19:57, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ruslik0: then there probably should not be a Template:Minpromtorg.gov.ru/en until someone actually translates into English. - Jmabel ! talk 03:07, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ruslik0 then why is there a link to an English version in the first place? It should either be deleted or someone should provide a Russian translation. Tube of Light (talk) 13:08, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Public domain non-Commons[edit]

Hi,

I'm trying to upload another version of this as a placeholder images for election boxes. The logo is in the public domain but not meant to be copied to Commons, fair enough

TLDR how exactly do I upload an image to Wiki without uploading to Commons? Totallynotarandomalt69 (talk) 22:13, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Go to Wikipedia, click on "Upload file", then click on "Upload a non-free file", and continue from there. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:57, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I came across File:הבחירה הדמוקרטית.png (the logo of an Israeli political party), which has been uploaded using the false rationale of it being in the public domain due to be published before 1929. However, I was wondering if would fall below the "threshold of originality" and be eligible to be on commons? If not, please delete it. Cheers, Number 57 (talk) 22:50, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Number 57 The current license does certainly seem incorrect. However, whether the logo itself can be kept as {{PD-logo}} depends on COM:TOO US and COM:TOO Israel (assuming Israel is the country of first publication). The only copyrightable element in the logo is (at least in my opinion) the flower. Perhaps the fower isn't complex enough to be eligible for protection under US copyright law, but it would certainly be eligible for such protection per COM:TOO UK. Since Israel's TOO seems to have followed the UK's up to 1989 before moving more towards the US thereafter, this could be what decides things with respect to Commons. Given that the file is only being used in the English Wikipedia article en:Democratic Choice (Israel), it could be re-uploaded locally to English Wikipedia and licensed as en:Template:PD-ineligible-USonly if it's PD in the US but not Israel; it could also be re-uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content if it isn't PD in both the US and Israel. Finally, for reference, the same file seems to be treated as non-free by Hebrew Wikipedia . This, of course, could just be someone being overly cautious and playing it safe, but it could also mean some did some digging and decided it wasn't PD in Israel. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:40, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Have I accurately attributed these images?[edit]

Hi there, I inadvertantly uploaded these images incorrectly to Wikimedia during the process of creating articles about these people (I'm new here, and learning), which is why the images were nominated for deletion. I think I have fixed the problem/s, but I'd be grateful if someone could take a look at them to see if I've attributed them properly:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MarekKowalkiewicz.jpg#%7B%7Bint%3Afiledesc%7D%7D

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nicole_Sahin.png#%7B%7Bint%3Afiledesc%7D%7D

For context, the images were taken by a professional photographer on their behalf, and they have been granted permission to share them on Wikimedia by the photographer. The image were then forward to me to upload. I'd be grateful if someone could let me know if I'm doing things the right/wrong way. Cheers, and thank you. KWriteReturn (talk) 03:26, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@KWriteReturn:
  1. You still have them marked as "own work", but you've now listed someone else as the photographer. That makes no sense.
  2. "the images were taken by a professional photographer on their behalf": on whose behalf?
  3. Permission "to share them on Wikimedia" is, sad to say, useless, at least for Commons. Per COM:L, Commons accepts only files that are either in the public domain (these pretty clearly aren't) or where the copyright-holder has explicitly granted a "free license" such as a CC-BY or CC-BY-SA license. Those aren't the only acceptable free licenses, but the license must allow for commercial use (which may, however, be limited by personality rights, trademark, or other non-copyright restrictions) and for the creation of derivative works.
On last, this permission "to share them on Wikimedia" falls short on two counts. (1) There is no explicit license allowing commercial use and derivative works and (2) we have only your word for someone else granting a license.
Other than the "own work" issue (which you can correct by accurately stating the source), the rest of this can be addressed by either of the following two approaches:
  1. Presuming the photographer is the copyright-holder, they can indicate the grant of license on any public-facing web page clearly under their own control (e.g. a website for their photography business; a Flickr page or something similar -- if they have a Flickr account, Flickr is well set up to allow a declaration of any of several different CC licenses; a publicly visible social media post; etc.) Basically, they can post the image, indicate that they are the photographer, and grant the permission. Sometimes it is useful for this purpose to create a page on a website that might even have no incoming links on the website, but where they provide the URL, and the domain is clearly under their control.
  2. The copyright-holder can send an overt declaration of a particular license as explained at COM:VRT. If the copyright-holder is someone other than the photographer, the VRT will also typically need a copy of the document that transferred copyright.
I know this is a little complicated, but publishing a third party's work legally is inherently complicated. - Jmabel ! talk 05:29, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for taking the time to help me, @Jmabel; I really appreciate it. I have updated the sources of both photos, and have asked both photographers to complete the VRT Release Generator. I believe that Marvin Fox has already completed this for Marek Kowalkiewicz's image. Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do. Once again, thank you! War memorial to Long Range Desert Group contact the photographer Graham Bould[edit]

I am trying to track down photographer Graham Bould who was the photographer of the War Memorial to the LRDG War Memorial at the Papakura Military Camp in New Zealand. The memorial that we were shown at the camp recently was not the one that Graham Bould had photographed but a new polished granite one. I am trying to track down the original but have not been able to find out where it has gone. It was in existence in 2023 according to the Waiouru Army Museum but is not able to be located now. It would be helpful for me to know where the original memorial was located at the camp as the new one may be in the position of the old one. 2405:DA40:1184:D000:A193:B00:6927:14E2 05:06, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP user 2405:DA40:1184:D000:A193:B00:6927:14E2. This help desk is mainly related to matters regarding Wikimedia Commons; it's not really a general help desk so to speak. You could try re-asking this question at the en:Wikipedia:Reference desk since perhaps someone there might be able to help you. You could also simply try Googling "Graham Bould" or the name of the memorial and see what turns up. It's possible someone here might just happen to know the answer to your questions, but I wouldn't count to much on that happening because it's really outside the scope of this help desk. I will add that a user named GrahamBould did upload File:LRDG Memorial at Papakura New Zealand.jpg back in 2006, but that account hasn't been used since 2014. You could try posting a message at User talk:GrahamBould but there's no way to know if you'll ever get a response. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:30, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(cross-posted) User:GrahamBould last contributed to Commons a decade ago and to Wikipedia even longer ago, so I suspect you won't be able to reach him. - Jmabel ! talk 05:33, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
At the time when that user was blocked from Wikipedia for copyright violations in 2009, his Wikipedia user page mentioned that he lived in England. From some clues, it can be guessed that he contributed anonymously on Wikipedia in 2014 with an internet address also in Great Britain. Anyway, I doubt that that person could help you with this memorial. -- Asclepias (talk) 10:32, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

I am sceptical if File:Tara Aghdashloo Director & Producer.png has been uploaded with a correct copyright tag. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4825691/mediaviewer/rm4276106240/?ref_=nm_md_1 is introduced as the source. I don't understand on what basis cc-by-sa-4.0 is the copyright tag. If that is wrong, the the image should get deleted.

You can either remove it from the code of Template:LocationSweden, or you can comment it out in the code, or you can create a template of that name or of another name, as you did when you created Template:Nav-PL, if there's not already an equivalent template in Category:Templates related to Sweden. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:07, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hungary · United Kingdom - Templates[edit]

There are Template:Location Germany and Template:Location Poland. Are there similar templates for the UK and Hungary? Thank you very much for your answer. Abraham OFM (talk) 17:27, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Abraham: Given that the two examples you give are red links, I believe you meant {{LocationGermany}} and {{LocationPoland}}. I don't offhand see anything at all similar for Hungary. The only thing I see at all like this for [part of] the UK is {{Location map UK England}}. - Jmabel ! talk 21:26, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tbkowalski: If you are asking how to remove it from Wikimedia Commons, you can nominate it for deletion (you can use the link "Nominate for deletion" from the file description page) and indicate a reason. The photo may be deleted if it's not in use, if you're not a notable person or for some other good reason. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:15, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Using a photo from Commons[edit]

Hi there, someone changed the photo on my wikipedia page to a new photo. I would like to use the original photo. The original photo is still available in wikipedia commons. How do i change it back? There are no copyright issues, since this is the original photo. Biafra1966 (talk) 13:04, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To which language Wikipedia are you referring? Different photos are used on different Wikipedias. Some are mirrored from Wikidata, some not. When was the photo changed? Most do not seem to have changed recently. Also, it could be prudent to discuss it with the other editors of the page. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:26, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jeff. Thanks so much. I'm speaking about the English language page. I think it changed in 2022. But I would it like it to go back to the previous photo, which is me on a stage at the microphone. I think there are about 5 photos in Wiki Commons now -- would love the earlier version please. Thank you. If you could do it for me, or show me what to do I'd appreciate it. Thank you :) Biafra1966 (talk) 19:14, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Biafra1966 While you may get the photo changed to one that you like more, it is always possible, that it gets changed again by anyone. The best chances to have the from your point of view "ideal" photo in the article, is if you yourself provide a photo, that is better than the existing one's. Photos chosen for an article are mostly "portrait" photos that show the face in high resolution and as the main part of the photos. Also recent photos are often preferred over older one's. So you could arrange for a photo shooting, with the resulting photo in high quality, showing mostly your face and still showing that you are on a stage. It is likely that such a photo would then stay in the article. (people with a biography article about themselves are discouraged to edit "their" article. The exception are photos: You are welcome to upload as many photos of yourself on commons as you like, they only need to come with a free license and may need to get verified by VRT, if someone else is the photographer.) C.Suthorn (@[email protected] - p7.ee/p) (talk) 20:43, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Biafra1966: Ah, the "stage" photo was added to the article in 2021 by a one-time contributor [2] and it was replaced with the "photo with the book" in 2022 by a regular contributor [3]. Both photos are good, but, beyond the fact that some people may prefer one photo or another, a problem with the "stage" photo is that it looks like it may be a copyright violation copied from this photo, at a 2019 event. So, without an authorization from the copyright owner, it probably cannot be kept anyway. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:54, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much. This was so helpful. I'm happy to provide the photo using the guidelines you suggested. What's the easiest way to do that? The photo instructions are very confusing. Biafra1966 (talk) 01:24, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mean the wikipedia photo instructions are confusing, not your instructions. Sorry! I hope that makes sense, ha! :) Biafra1966 (talk) 01:25, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Biafra1966: The key thing is that the copyright-holder needs to provide a free license. It is simplest if the copyright-holder is also the uploader, but alternatively:
  1. They can post the picture and license to any Internet page clearly under their control (public-facing social media post, Flickr account, personal web site, etc.) and anyone can cite that as source and upload the image.
  2. They can go through the COM:VRT process.
I hope that answers your question, but if it doesn't, feel free to continue discussing here. - Jmabel ! talk 01:58, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Happy to do all of these things. But what are the actual steps to uploading a picture? Where do I go on the site? Biafra1966 (talk) 01:56, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Biafra1966: I'm going to guess that the best place for you to start is Commons:First_steps/Uploading_files. - Jmabel ! talk 20:45, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to place it on the Wikipedia page that talks about our museum, or a link to it (hyperlink). Question. Where (in which Wiki project) to upload the video, in which video category can you place a short tour (6-7 min). And then how to place videos in the article.
If possible, write an algorithm of actions to achieve the above goal.

Typically, the best way to upload a video is Commons:video2commons. It looks like the documentation is partially translated to Ukrainian at Commons:video2commons/uk.
The most relevant category would be a category for the museum; you might look through Category:Videos for other possibly relevant additional categories.
Do be careful about copyright. Typically much of what is in a museum is copyrighted. For example, your video may show other people's copyrighted photos, paintings, etc. If they are shown passingly without the camera lingering on them, that may be OK, but it could be enough to make your video into a derivative work. If so, Commons would require you to "clear" licenses for any copyrighted content significantly reproduced. - Jmabel ! talk 22:26, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect on rights for certain images; unsure how to proceed[edit]

A recent perusal of my uploads made me realize some rights issues with some photos.

So, for context, John Prentice is my step-grandfather, and I uploaded the following images, but did not have the rights to them:

Not fully understanding copyright at the time, knowing I had my grandmother's permission to upload them, and considering I had "taken" the photos that were being uploaded (i.e. I had "scanned" them in with my phone), I thought this was okay. I now recognize that this was not correct, however. I don't think there is any way to verify her permission (she's not good with technology), so my inclination was to request they all be deleted (instead of trying to verify her permission), but I wasn't sure.

On top of this, I uploaded File:Robert Nemanich 2023.jpg on behalf of someone else; I had permission in this case, as well (I tried convincing the actual photographer to upload it themselves, but they asked me to do it for them, and for reasons I can't get into, a different set of issues would have arisen had I done the VRT verification route, so I thought, eh, no big deal), but I definitely should have known better. I can maybe see if in the future I can get the person to upload on Flickr or something so I can share it, but my main concern now is telling the truth and making it right.

I apologize for these mistakes. I've genuinely enjoyed contributing to Wikimedia these past many months, and I am incredibly sorry that I let the community down with my actions. My intent was always in good faith, but mistakes were made, nonetheless. I hope this can be rectified as soon as possible, in as best a way as possible, and that I can still contribute. Again, I am very sorry.

Thank you,

@Packer1028: Hi, and welcome. @Packer1028: Hi, For the photos showing John Prentice, the first thing is to determine the photographer(s) and the copyright owner(s). The photos look like family photos but not like self-portraits by John Prentice. If your grandmother is the photographer or acquired the copyrights, she could, as Jeff G. suggests, sign an equivalent paper and you can send a copy to VRT. It may be prudent to first ask at the VRT noticeboard if they accept. If your grandmother is not the photographer or the copyright owner, she cannot issue a license. If other copyright owner(s) is (are) known, the solution can be to request a free license from them. If the photos can be kept, please correct the author, source and date statements in the description pages and remove the self template from the licenses. For the photo showing Robert Nemanich, if it is impossible in any way to get the copyright owner to validate the potential license, then the file should probably be nominated for deletion. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:26, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to delete your older upload, you have to nominate it for deletion, just as if it had been uploaded by anyone else.
If you want to change a filename, use the "move" tab above the image. If you have Filemover privileges, this will actually let you move it; if not, it will help you fill out a form for a move request. In general, if the non-profit in question is well-enough known (something like Oxfam, or Mercy Corps, or a major symphony orchestra) and if they have claimed copyright and granted a license on their own site, we would usually assume good faith. But, otherwise, it is almost always a good idea to go through VRT to clarify that the copyrights were assigned (copy of assignment document) and that the uploader represents the non-profit (send email to VRT from the non-profit's domain, be able to respond to email there). - Jmabel ! talk 18:30, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is a similar situation with the 2018 photo and it is more urgent because the speedy deletion tag has been there for a longer time. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:52, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The photo from 2018 was taken by my sister. If it gets deleted now, that's not so tragic. For now, I would like to bring the picture from 1983 through the thicket of regulations. That has priority now. As I'm in hospital next week, I can only take care of it until Sunday. After that, I won't be able to do anything to get the photo from 1983 accepted until June 10. @Chinnichap: I've taken the first step for you. You can follow up at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Helmut Sinor (1983).jpg. Question: any connection to Chinn & Chapman? If not, that user name may be a problem. I believe it's probably a trademarked name. - Jmabel ! talk 18:37, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I created this username years ago to familiarize myself a little with the possibilities. It was simply the first username that spontaneously came to mind. At that time, I had no intention of ever contributing to Wikipedia myself. If the problems are due to that, I could certainly change the username.
Should I do this in the current situation or will it only make things more complicated? Chinnichap (talk) 07:42, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Use of images[edit]

Today I received (after asking of course) professional pictures of the person I wanted to write an article about. Now the person gave me permission to upload it on Wikipedia, but im not sure if he gave permission to upload it Wikimedia and make it available to everyone. What can I do in this case? Thank you BearThatRun (talk) 18:41, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@BearThatRun: first, you need to find out who owns the copyright for the images. Typically that will not be the subject of the photo, unless it is a selfie: it will be the photographer. Assuming the copyright has not been transferred, and the photogrpapher still holds the copyright, there are basically two ways to go:
  • The copyright-holder can post the image on a web page clearly under their control (their own web site, a public-facing social media post, their Flickr account, etc.) and indicate an appropriate free license that they are offering (I'd recommend either CC-BY 4.0 or CC-BY-SA 4.0). They can indicate a required attribution if they like, but the license they offer must allow (1) commercial reuse and (2) derivative works. Then anyone can cite that page for source/permission and upload the file to Commons.
  • The copyright-holder can go through the process described at COM:VRT to send an email granting a free license (again, I'd recommend either CC-BY 4.0 or CC-BY-SA 4.0).
If the copyright has been transferred, then really only the second option is viable, because they will need to provide a copy of the document that transferred copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 03:16, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Hello, is there a way to show more than 200 files on a category? Ideally, is there a way to show all files on a category? RodRabelo7 (talk) 19:41, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All I'm aware of is (1) open it in VFC; (2) keep loading 100 at a time by going to the bottom; (3) ignore that VFC is supposed to be about making changes in the files: you can click on any that you want to see in a tab of its own. - Jmabel ! talk 03:21, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
